The main idea of the J.P. Sweelinck International Organ Music Competition is to promote the work of the competition patron - Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and activate and support promising young organists. Facilitating the exchange of experiences and initiating artistic contacts, which then result in an international musical collaboration. Moreover, the competition offers young artists the opportunity to direct contact with prominent representatives of the world of organ music. For the winners, in addition to financial rewards, involve  awards in the form of concerts.
The competition takes place since 1992, the three-year cycle. The exception is the year 1997 (competition took place a year earlier, on account of the celebrations of the millennium of Gdańsk). Many competitions are held regularly in the years: 2000, 2003, 2006, 2009 and 2012. In 2015, for the first time in the history of the competition auditions will be held in Pasłęk, in the historic St. Bartholomew on the famous, the newly restored organ by Gdańsk organ builder - Andreas Hildebrandt.

J.P. Sweelinck International Organ Music Competition organized every three years since 1992, offers young organists possibility of a positive sense of rivalry before an international jury of distinguished experts in the genre. Gdańsk competition allows young students organ opportunity to exchange experiences and artistic contacts, which then result in an international musical collaboration. The winners of the previous editions of the competition are: Maciej Zakrzewski (2009), Ioanna Solomonidou - Greece (2012).

The international jury: prof. Rubin Abdullin, prof. Andrzej Chorosiński, prof. Ludger Lohmann, prof. Martin Sander, prof. Józef Serafin and prof. Roman Perucki.
