On the 1st of December in the New City Hall the winners of the 4th Competition “”Disabled-Friendly Places 2009” were given awards of the President of the City of Gdańsk - Paweł Adamowicz during a special ceremony.

Eight objects entered to the competition (six recommended by the organizations for disabled people and two nominated by the buildings’ operators). Those included sports objects, cultural establishments, food and drink places, one housing co-operative and one hotel.
The Jury, which included representatives of institutions for the disabled, architects, building sites supervisors and representatives of the disabled people, assessed the buildings both in terms of their architectonical adaptation and their operators’ mental approach to the disabled.

In this year’s competition three object were awarded with the tile of “A Disabled-Friendly Place 2009”.
The Polish Baltic Frédéric Chopin Philharmonic in Gdańsk was given the highest appreciation and was followed by the Lechia Gdańsk’s Centre for Football Training and the Scandic Hotel. The jury also distinguished the Miasto Aniołów Club and the chain of Leone Restaurants for their openness and sensibility to the needs of disabled people and their supportive activities.

The objective of the “Disabled-Friendly Places” competition is to promote public construction industry that is disabled-friendly as well as to identify objects in Gdańsk that are best adapted to the needs of disabled people.
