The Symphony Orchestra was established together with the Philharmonic in 1945. Currently, the Gdańsk Philharmonic is one of the leading orchestras in Poland, and the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdańsk is a dynamic musical center and a place of significant national and international events.

The Symphony Orchestra participated in many national and European music festivals. Significant artistic events in recent years include: 2005, Gdańsk Shipyard, Jean-Michel Jarre's concert on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the founding of "Solidarity" and the signing of the August Agreements; 2006, Gdańsk Shipyard, anniversary of August '80, premiere of Jan AP Kaczmarek's cantata "Cantata about Freedom"; 2008, the Brass Section of the Symphony Orchestra took part in the performance of "The Seven Gates of Jerusalem" by Krzysztof Penderecki as part of a concert to celebrate his 75th birthday. The concert was conducted by the composer himself, under whose baton the Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, choir and soloists also played; 2009, as part of the "Solidarity of Arts" Festival, performance of "War Requiem" by B. Britten under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner. The concert honored the global celebration of the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II and the 20th anniversary of regaining freedom and the fall of communism in Central Europe.
In 2014, the Orchestra toured China, performing seven concerts in the largest concert halls, including twice in Shanghai and, among others, at the Beijing Philharmonic. In January 2016, the orchestra embarked on the longest tour in history around the United States.
The orchestra has recorded many radio, television and CD/DVD recordings. Recent recordings with the orchestra include the recording of Britten's "War Requiem" conducted by Sir Neville Marriner (the album was nominated for the FRYDERYK 2011 award), the recording of Tchaikovsky's 2010th Symphony and Violin Concerto conducted by Maxim Vengerov, the premiere and recording of VIVO XXX by Paweł Mykietyn ( 2012), the cantata "Genesis" conducted by Ernst van Tiel (XNUMX), "Musical portrait of Gershwin" with the participation of conductor Vladimir Kiradijev and pianist Ludmil Angelov, the recording "Outstanding Polish artists: Henryk Wieniawski" with the participation of violin virtuoso Maxim Vengerov or the album "Bacewicz /Shostakovich” with Alena Baeva - an artist who is one of the most outstanding musical talents of her generation.
